Stories of Hope |
|
My name is Genet Tadesse. I am 22 years old . I live with my parents in Addis Ababa in the vicinity of ALERT hospital. I completed my high school education six years ago in the year 2001, but did not succeeded in getting the minimum required grade in the national exam to join a higher education at the college level. Again my family was economically incapable of sending me to private colleges and other institutions for skills training, so I resorted to staying at home helping my family, rather than going to school like some of my friends in the neighborhood did. It was very depressing for me and I was in a hopeless situation until the day I heard about the tutor training program for the youth at Medhen Social Center (MSC). I was fortunate to register in the training program of MSC, which helped me to keep on learning and develop my confidence. I improved my English language skills through reading books from the library at the center and also the trainings given to me at a class level. The life skills and value education, together with other professional courses I learnt, helped me to acquire basic knowledge in the developmental aspect of children and socialization processes, besides the basic subject teaching skills in English & Maths. I can now converse and introduce myself using the English language, and my confidence is very much enhanced than it was before. I benefited a lot from my stay at MSC and helped me to be a competent citizen, having a vision for further success in education. Accordingly upon successful completion of the tutor training program and also while I was in-service trainee, I was tutoring tutees at the study stations of the center, which fulfilled my desire for teaching. I love teaching and I wish to be an English language instructor, for this I will join a college coming October 2007 to pursue with my language studies. I take this opportunity to thank again Medhen Social Center (MSC), for helping me regain back my hope in life through education. I feel happy now when I tell that the center gave me the opportunity to be a member of the dedicated team of staffs, by hiring me as an assistant social worker, where I will be working in the care and support program of the old age. This would enable me to support my poor family and we all are happy about it. I believe it is possible to impact positively the life of many youngsters & children in poor living condition, if proper guidance and support is given, as my life has demonstrated. ~ Giving hope…..to M.O.R.E. children ~ |
